LA106: How does the Overvoltage protection work on the KONSTANTER?

In the case of overvoltage protection, a comparator independent of the voltage monitor (sense amplifier) and voltage regulator monitors the voltage applied to the load connection terminals and compares them with the set response value, which in turn is generated by a separate D / A converter with its own reference voltage.

If the output voltage exceeds the threshold value, an OUTPUT ON OFF process is triggered via the processor (with temporary activation of the sink function to quickly discharge the output capacitor) and, in addition, the clock for the power transformer is blocked in terms of hardware so that no further energy transfer is possible.

By means of OUTPUT OFF ON, the overvoltage protection is reset and the output is reactivated. The response time of the overvoltage protection is adjustable, but is minimal up to 200μs.

If the overvoltage protection is set correctly, it protects connected devices from excessive voltage caused by:

  • accidentally too high voltage setting with manual operation at computer control when controlled by external analog signal

  • accidentally reverse polarity connection of the sense lines

  • Incorrect switching sequence of the load and sense lines by means of relays with active output (set order: first load then switch on sense lines, first sense and then switch off load lines).

  • Malfunction or defect in the device It does not protect the device from defects due to the application of common-pole voltages to the output terminals that exceed the specified value of the voltage recovery resistance.
